LIVE IN VILLAGES, PLOW FIELDS … BEFORE CITIES.
Aspects of the primary economy of the communities of Southern Etruria between the Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age

The project aims to investigate in a new light the settlements in Southern Etruria during the Final Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age (1150–850 BC).

Through the use of landscape archaeology and land evaluation techniques, I will reconstruct the agricultural dimension (and consequently the demography) of the villages of this important area during a crucial phase in  Italian Protohistory; the period of the so called ‘Svolta Protourbana’ or Protourban Turn.

This great historical phenomenon led from the abandonment of  the polycentric structure of the Final Bronze Age - based on hundreds of villages - to the formation of the proto-urban settlements of Vulci, Tarquinia, Caere, Veio and Volsinii, the predecessors of the future grand Etruscan cities.
