Depression has the highest disease burden of all disorders in western society. To increase treatment efficacy, personalized medicine focusing on the wide range of underlying pathophysiological mechanisms is essential. One promising line of research within this goal is the influence of sex steroids. This is based on the large gender gap in vulnerability to depression, with women losing out.

For my MD-PhD thesis, I will try to reveal the role sex steroids in depression in a combined project with the University of Groningen and Harvard University. My project is embedded in the largest, world leading cohort study on depression and anxiety: The Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety (NESDA). Subsequently, I will investigate a specific subgroup of menopausal depressed women with hormonal fluctuations in collaboration with Professor Joffe from Harvard University.
