This doctoral research project aims to gain insight in the level and characteristics of mathematical reasoning by undergraduate mathematics students and to find ways to improve their mathematical reasoning.
In a longitudinal study consisting of task-based think-aloud interviews insight is gained in the mathematical reasoning by undergraduate mathematics students and its evolution during the bachelor. By educational interventions in the bachelor mathematics we investigate how students' reasoning can be enhanced.
Interventions are implemented in the bachelor mathematics of two universities: KU Leuven and University of Groningen. Data is collected through task-based think-aloud interviews, observations (video recorded), interviews and questionnaires. As such, the research will be primarily qualitative.
