UTQ registration: brief overview
The University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) is proof of didactic competence for lecturers in academic education. In early 2008, the fourteen Dutch universities signed the Basiskwalificatie Onderwijs/University Teaching Qualification (BKO/UTQ) agreement. Lecturers with a UTQ certificate are considered to be qualified for academic teaching by all participating institutions.
The Board of the University has decided that by 2015, 80% of all lecturers must have a University Teaching Qualification. UTQ registration is not only an important tool in improving teaching quality, it also enables you to reflect on and improve your own teaching. Experienced lecturers can use their UTQ registration to prove that they satisfy the following quality requirements:
- Design and redesign of teaching
- Teaching and supervising students
- Testing and assessment
You can gain your UTQ registration by compiling a portfolio from the material you have already used in your teaching practice. If you notice that your portfolio is incomplete, you can work on remedying this, upon which it will be assessed by a Faculty UTQ registration committee.
UTQ registration is intended for University of Groningen lecturers with at least five years of teaching experience in higher education and at least 0.2 FTE in teaching duties. An intake interview will be held to assess whether you satisfy these requirements. If this is not the case, you can follow the regular UTQ programme or a tailored programme.
This memorandum, which was approved by the University of Groningen UTQ-STQ Committee in June 2014, sets out the policy with regard to a number of specific groups within this wider reference group:
- Lecturers with a BO, OT or THE certificate (precursors to the University of Groningen UTQ programme)
- Lecturers with a Pedagogisch Didactische Aantekening [Pedagogic Didactic Option] from a University of Applied Sciences who have compiled a portfolio abroad
- Lecturers with a grade-one teaching qualification or VELON registration
Please contact your faculty UTQ contact person for more information on how to apply for UTQ registration.
You will need to take a number of steps to gain your UTQ registration.
