University of Groningen enters top 100 of research universities

15 August 2013

The University of Groningen is now in 92nd place in the Academic Ranking of World Universities list for 2013. It is the first time the University has entered the top 100.

First on the Shanghai Ranking list is Harvard University, followed by Stanford University and the University of California Berkeley. The University of Cambridge is the first European university, in fifth place.

Utrecht University is the highest ranked Dutch university, in 52nd place. Leiden University ranks 74th and the University of Groningen is the third and last Dutch university in the top 100.

A division into science subjects shows that Groningen is doing very well in Chemistry (ranked in the group 51st-75th). In Physics, the University ranks in the 101st-150th group. In the field of Life Sciences, the position is 76th-100th.

Last year, Groningen came close to becoming one of the best 100 research universities in the world, both in the Shanghai Ranking list and the QS World University Rankings. On the occasion of the publication of the QS Rankings, President of the Board Sibrand Poppema said: ‘It would be fantastic if we were in the top 100 of all the ranking lists by 2014, the year we celebrate our 400th anniversary.’
