The energetic driving force required to drive charge separation across donor/acceptor interfaces is a key consideration for organic photovoltaics. In this talk, I will present a series of transient absorption and photocurrent experiments for low bandgap polymer/fullerene blends to study the mechanism of charge separation at the donor-acceptor interface. Both the role of fullerene and polymer excitons in driving charge photogeneration was evaluated. The experimental data are in agreement with a model where formation of charge transfer states with excess energy facilitates charge separation at the donor acceptor interface.
