Poly-3-AlkylThiophenes (P3ATs) with an n-alkyl chain length varying from C3 till C9 have been synthesized by using the Rieke method. Subsequently, P3AT:PCBM bulk heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells were prepared using o-dichlorobenzene and a combination of slow drying and thermal annealing. In the phase diagram of the P3HT:PCBM blend a single glass transition is observed for all compositions. The observed range of T g’s defines the operating window for thermal annealing and explains the long-term instability of both morphology and photovoltaic performance of P3HT:PCBM solar cells. All regioregular P3ATs allow for efficient nanofiber formation in several solvents. The influence of modifications in the side chain were also studied in function of obtained morphology and stability of the solar cell device. Seemingly small modifications can made major impact on the stability of the nano-morphology of the blend.
