The main challenges and opportunities of X-ray/ Neutron scattering and spectroscopy for studying metal oxides are addressed using examples of indium-based binary oxides, perovskites and spinels as well as nanocrystalline ferrites. Several other topics are also discussed; that includes: (i) synthesis of size- and shape-controlled oxide nanocrystals, and (ii) in-situ studies of their crystallization and phase transitions and structure-property relationships.
