An overview on the two main research lines currently under course in our group is given is illustrated with several selected examples. Biobased linear polycondensation polymers are synthesized using monomers coming from easily accessible carbohydrates. Highly crystalline poly(galactaramides) and poly(mannaramides) are prepared by reaction in solution and their crystalline structure is determined by diffraction methods. PET derived copolyesters containing isosorbide are obtained by polycondensation in the melt. The industrial interest of these amorphous high-Tg novel copolyesters is discussed. Secondly, microbial poly(gamma-glutamic acid) and poly(beta-malic acid) are modified by esterification or ionic coupling with cationic surfactants to produce non-water soluble derivatives. The structure adopted in the solid state by these novel compounds is studied regarding their potential in packaging and biomedical applications.
