Polarization resolved X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is a powerful tool available at 3rd generation synchrotron radiation sources to unravel the electronic, magnetic and atomic structures of low-dimensional systems. These systems display a large variety of electronic and magnetic collective phenomena that stem from the subtle interplay between orbital, spin and lattice degree of freedom.
This contribution will provide an overview of the results obtained on a series of layered oxides studied by means of polarization dependent XAS. The experimental data will be discussed using density functional theory calculations.
