The valence isomerization / dehydrogenation (VID) reaction of [2.2]metacyclophane-1,9-dienes has proved to be a very powerful method for the formation of (2,7)pyrenophanes having nonplanar pyrene systems.  Even severely distorted pyrenes can be synthesized under relatively mild conditions.  More recently, we have working to extend this methodology to the synthesis of much larger cyclophanes, the aromatic systems of which map onto the surfaces of armachair single-walled carbon nanotubes.  The synthesis and structural features of 1,1,8,8-tetramethyl[8](2,11)teropyrenophane will be presented along with progress toward the synthesis of complete aromatic belts.
