A breakthrough in high-temperature superconductivity has recently occurred with the discovery that iron arsenide and selenide layers can support critical temperatures surpassed only by the high-Tc cuprates. This presentation will summarize recent work on the Nd1-xAxFeAsO (A = Ca, Sr) series prepared via ambient pressure synthesis and on the late rare-earth RFeAs(O,F) (R = Tb, Dy and Ho) superconductors prepared using high-pressure high-temperature methods. Substitution of Nd3+ with Sr2+ affords a superconducting phase with Tc = 13.5 K (x = 0.2), while the high-pressure phases have Tc’s of 51 K (Tb), 45 K (Dy) and 36 K (Ho).
