An electromagnetic version of Young’s interference setup is considered with partially coherent and partially polarized electric fields at the pinholes.  The electromagnetic degree of coherence, which can be viewed as a measure of the modulation contrasts of all the four Stokes parameters, is still subject to debate and alternate formulations are mentioned. Our analysis treats the field’s intensity and polarization state on equal basis. If the electric field at the openings is fully coherent and polarized, the periodic variation of the polarization on the observation screen leads to the so-called Pancharatnam-Berry phase. This geometric phase has an elegant relationship to the Stokes parameters at the pinholes, and some of its general properties are discussed.
