We grow AlxGa1-xAs/GaAs heterostructures and self-organized InAs quantum dots by molecular beam epitaxy. Focussed ion beams of practically all metallic ion species of the periodic table give the possibility of tailoring and ex-situ doping of semiconductors. By combining these methods in an ultra high vacuum, numerous solid-state systems are feasible: Field-effect controlled transport structures, micro light emitting diodes, and quantum dot growth on intentional sites. Charging spectra of quantum dot ensembles are presented, showing clear occupation with single electrons and wave function mapping of their eigenstates.
