Materials possessing more than one ferroic order (which includes magnetism, ferroelectricity, elastic distortions etc) are referred to as multiferroic. The recently discovered multiferroic material TbMnO3 has attracted considerable attention due to its strong magnetoelectric effect, whereby the electric polarisation can be switched by the application of magnetic fields. Of key importance to the understanding the functionality of multiferroic materials, is the complete description of all the various orders parameters. Resonant X-ray Scattering (RXS) is well established as revealing a great diversity of ordering phenomena in solids. In this seminar, RXS results on TbMnO3 in applied magnetic fields up to 10 Tesla, will be discussed.
