Silicon nanoparticles attract a lot of attention as they have a unique set of properties, including tunable photophysics, non-toxicity, and chemically stable functionalization. The presentation will introduce the topic of covalent surface modification of silicon-containing surfaces, and its specification towards silicon nanoparticles. The detailed preparation, characterization and photophysics of these nanoparticles will be discussed, including energy transfer between the nanoparticle and covalently attached dyes. Finally, goals towards their use as potential bio-sensors will be formulated.
