Although in conventional ferroelectrics the requirements of magnetism and ferroelectricity are chemically incompatible, recent investigations of spin frustrated maganites perovskites RMnO3 have shown that this chemical incompatibility can be overcomed by frustration. In this talk I will describe the changes in magnetic structure that are associated by field induced changes in the direction of the polarization for R=Tb and Dy. In broad terms these transitions can well understood in terms of phenomenological theory as well as from the magnetic excitations of a spiral magnetic ordering observed in the ferroelectric phase.
