Over the recent years enzymes have become an alternative tool in polymer synthesis and modification. The most prominent case is the enzymatic synthesis of polyesters. While undoubtedly molecular weights comparable to chemical catalysis can be achieved, the scope and limitations of enzymes for making unique materials is not fully investigated. This presentation will highlight some of our work focusing around enzymatic routes to polymer architectures. Fundamental aspects arising from the unique characteristics of the enzymatic procedure will be covered as well as novel synthetic routes to chiral polymers.
