In order to promote or control the catalytic properties of noble metal catalysts, the use of bimetallic counterparts is extensively studied. Aiming at a deep understanding of the role of structural properties of the catalysts in their reactivity, finely dispersed metals deposited on suitable supports such as alumina, silica or magnesia have been extensively studied as model catalysts. A detailed characterization of PdFe bimetallic particles supported on a thin alumina film will be presented. The morphology of these systems was investigated by STM and the distribution of the constituents within the particles with respect to the system composition and order of metal deposition was studied by XPS, TPD and IRAS, using CO as a probe molecule. In addition, changes of the magnetic properties namely the magnetic anisotropy and the g-value of the PdFe particles as a function of the preparation conditions will be briefly discussed.
