Divers designs of naturally evolved butterfly nano-scale periodicity are known to generate a broad range of optical functionalities. While these systems have clearly evolved over many millions of years for biological purposes, they are increasingly offering inspiration and design protocols for applied optical technologies. This talk will introduce and describe the findings of recent research in this field and will offer an optical categorisation of the known existing range of different butterfly nanostructures.
