Polyelectrolytes pose a large number of very challenging physics problems. In this talk an introduction to some of these will be given. In particular a model for the behaviour of counter-ions in the vicinity of macro-ions, and how these counter-ions themselves affect the conformation of polyelectrolyte chains will be discussed. The resulting effective chain-chain interaction shows features which can be used as a source for further investigations on this topic.
