First, an introduction into optical data storage is given with emphasis on phase-change optical recording with its writing, erasing and reading mechanisms. Then, experiences with Ge2Sb2Te5 thin film deposition (both e-beam evaporation and sputtering) and the resulting compositional, structural and optical properties are presented. Finally, an outlook is given on possible progress and new developments in the field of phase-change materials.
