I will describe physics of superconducting quantum bit circuits based on magnetic flux. In order to coherently manipulate the quantum state of these rather large systems it is crucial, that the decoherence originating in the macroscopic solid-state environment is mastered. I will discuss the case of understanding and engineering the influence of the electronic degrees of freedom in the surrounding circuit. The results will be applied to the physics of quantum measurements.
