Real photonic crystals usually show some absorption. This leads to a band structure consisting of islands in the complex plane. In addition bandgaps no longer exist. For the study of the radiative decay of embedded atoms and their mutual interactions quantisation is required. We discuss how this is done in the absorptive case. Finally we indicate how a perturbative approach for small absorption, starting from a non-absorptive situation, can be set up.
