Abstract

While the band theory of solids was successful in describing the electrical behavior of materials, it failed to predict correctly the insulating properties of certain transition metal oxides. These deficiencies were accounted by Neville Mott when he introduced strong interactions between electrons with the wider consequences of giving birth to the strongly correlated field in condensed matter physics.
