The province of Fryslân will be subject to demographic change in the coming years. Given the draining away of population and traditional employment, possibilities for a new economic structure are to be studied. Leisure economy could play an important role in this restructured economy. The central question of this project is how the development of a sustainable leisure economy could be directed. To answer this question, academic research will be performed into the economic, geographic and institutional importance of the various leisure sectors. Additionally, a non-linear approach to the leisure sector will be examined, taking account of complex adaptive systems, socio-ecological systems and governance structures. Finally a substantiated vision for a sustainable integrated leisure economy will be developed.
