Summary

A major spatial shift is taking place in Fryslân (Friesland) in terms of both population and economic activity. Population shrinkage and demographic ageing in rural areas are coinciding with the concentration of highly qualified young people in the towns and cities, as a result of factors including the increasing importance of IT Broadband, knowledge intensification, more freelancers, globalization, the New Way of Working, etc. This also raises the question as to what extent liveability in villages and neighbourhoods is affected (threatened?) by employment and income opportunities, and vice versa: how does the social and human capital in villages and neighbourhoods influence the economic strength of Fryslân through entrepreneurship, creativity and innovation? How does the Regional Innovation System (RIS) work in Fryslân?
