Tourism and Identity

Tourism is the fastest growing economic sector worldwide. By bringing in money from elsewhere, incoming tourism has an economically stimulating character for regions. This also applies for the province of Fryslân. Traditional pillars for Frisian tourism are water sports and the Wadden Islands. It is not clear whether the Frisian identity and language can also be used for branding of tourism in Fryslân, especially as tourists in our urbanizing world increasingly look for immaterial features. If so, it could broaden the attractiveness of the province, although this should not damage this identity. Can the Frisian identity be considered a main tourist product, or is it better to position it as a derived product?
This PhD project has two aims:
1. To operationalize the concept of regional identity in general, and Frisian identity specifically.
2. To develop a scientifically based way on how regional identity in general and Frisian identity specifically can be described, measured, influenced and used for touristic branding of the province of Fryslân.
