Pop-up consoles offer a (controversial) means of presenting ads over the Internet. If a number of pop-ups are opened using involuntary triggers located at the entrances of a number of sites, virtual programs will emerge comprised of the entire set of commands from all of the linked sites. Notably, these emergent programs are not necessarily designed nor maintained by anyone. Such programs change without warning as site-managers buy and sell advertising space 24-hours per day in a global market. As a result of these virtual programs, site-managers might not know what kinds of users see their ads. What is worse, managers might not even know how their sites will be presented when their ads are triggered. Hence, the dynamic nature of the Internet medium may be both a blessing and a curse for managers engaging in e-commerce. This paper examines some of the unique Internet marketing strategies that rely on a dynamic, interactive medium. Unpredicted and undesirable consequences of operating within a dynamic medium are also considered. The unpredictability of the emergent programs may vary as a function of the density of involuntary triggers located at site entrances. Hence, a study is conducted to determine how pervasive these ties are.
