Several methods are available to gain insigt in the spectroscopic and relaxalion properties of optically excited molecules. They can be studied in the vapor phase, in solution, in tneir own or in a host crystal or in a noble gas matrix. The two latter methods of sampling are typically performded cryogenic temperatures. The decrease of thermal excitation provides in general much higher spectroscopic resolution than possible with spectroscopy in the vapor phase and solution which are feasible only at temperatures of a few hundred K. ...
