This thesis describes a study on the ecophysiology of thiobacilli. It is generally accepted that these sulfur-oxidizing bacteria play an important role in the sulfur cycle. This is due to their ability to oxidize reduced inorganic sulfur compounds to sulfate, with molecular oxygen or in some instances with nitrate as the electron acceptor.
