On the professional development of teachers mentioned in the Dutch Law of Vacations in Education (BIO), is published and debated extensively. At the national level in the last decenium the Dutch Educational Committee dedicated even five reports to the professionality of teachers.In the same period, internationally a huge amount of scientific publications appeared on teacher professional development. Nevertheless it seems that proffesional devlopment of teachers stays a quite problematic issue. Often it is suggested that a totally new approach of the issue is needed. And additionally, is argumented that a new approach should connect the professional development of teachers with the personal aspects of the learningprocesses of the individual teachers in specific work environments. Starting from the belief that teachers as professionals do have relative freedom in restraint to make their own choices with respect to professional development, in this contribution the theory of transformative learning is used to tackle the permanent ethical and societal urgency for change in education and schools accordingly. This theory describes how individuals learn with will to contribute to work improvements which are socially and culturally asked for. This article focusses on the two-sided question: can teachers contribute to their own professional development and which role does the theory of transformative learning play in this respect.
