The risk of getting injured in team sports, such as soccer and basketball, is considerably high, especially in the legs. Considering the physical and psychological consequences of injuries in team sports combined with large costs, prevention of these injuries is crucial. Coaches and athletes are often hesitant to implement an injury prevention program. The aim of this thesis was to increase knowledge about injury screening tools and prevention programs for leg injuries.
First, an oversight of available injury screening tools and limiting or enhancing factors for implementation in practice was given. Examples of predictive injury screening tools were flexibility, strength and balance tests. Subsequently, Dallinga focused on anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury prevention programs. Instructions in injury prevention programs can be given to induce an internal attention (IF) ‘bend your knees’ or external attention focus (EF) ‘land softly’. EF instructions encourage auto¬matic learning processes, the athlete focuses on the outcome of the movement instead of the movement itself. Dallinga introduced new methods that can improve current ACL injury prevention programs. EF instructions and video feedback were used to encourage automatic learning processes. An evaluation showed that male athletes improved their movement pattern after receiving video feedback.
Dallinga found several screen¬ing tools to screen for lower extremity injury risk, however further investigation of the predictive value, practical applicability and sport-specificity is needed. Furthermore, visual feedback seems promising in optimizing landing technique in males. For females the advice is to add verbal EF instructions. Future studies should evaluate these new methods in a real-sports situation.
