Figurational sociology goes back to Norbert Elias' The Civilization Process (published as Ueber den Prozes der Zivilisation in 1939). Elias' magnum opus stimulated much historical and sociological research in the 1970s. This article evaluates the state of the art of this historical sociology by using the heuristic model developed by the historian of science Imre Lakatos, that tries to combine insights of the historian of science Thomas Kuhn and the philosopher of science Karl Popper.
