There is a growing need for data analysis in medical microbiological laboratories in the Netherlands. However, an organisation can only be data-driven if supported by high-quality data, appropriate organisational and IT structures, and of course the presence of a knowledgeable data expert. 'Data expert' is an umbrella term covering the differing work packages of epidemiologists, data scientists, and data analysts. We offer guidance and expectation management for laboratories that would like to recruit such professionals, to mitigate the risk of listing impossible job profiles. After all, complex analyses are only possible with appropriate support and a good data-mindset in the organisation. Furthermore, this article describes the impact of data-driven medical microbiology. To this end, asistance, to inform optimal therapeutic choices, to provide feedback on diagnostic practices, to guarantee quality, and to support surveillance and infection prevention efforts. lf the data expert is embraced by the medical microbiology laboratory and organisation, this professional will prosper and make substantial contributions to improved quality of healthcare, lower costs, and increased customer satisfaction.
