This article aims to give an update on the use of positron emission tomography in prostate carcinoma. Carbon-11 labelled choline and acetate seem to be the most useful tracers for this tumour. Lymph node metastases >5 mm can be detected and located with 11C-choline PET. It can also localise recurrent tumour upon biochemical failure after curative treatment with radiotherapy. This role for 11C-choline PET seems unclear in the follow-up after radical prostatectomy. The prognostic value of PET in advanced prostate cancer requires more research.
