This paper attempts to examine some first questions related to the Dutch legal humanists and the Hexabiblos, a Byzantine collection made by Harmenopoulos in 1344/45. The third edition of the Hexabiblos was made by Otto Reitz (The Hague, 1780), but as Pitsakis writes in the introduction to his edition of the Hexabiblos, “the edition of Reitz was a result of a long preparation” and then Pitsakis refers to some Dutch scholars who were involved in this “preparation”. Who were the Dutch legal humanists interested in studying the Hexabiblos? Why did the representatives of the jurisprudentia elegantior deal with Harmenopoulos, a “scriptor mediocris” according to Zachariä von Lingenthal? After a brief general reference to the Dutch Elegant School, the paper focuses on two names: David Ruhnkenius, who was occupied for a long time with the edition of the Hexabiblos, and Abraham Haverkamp, who wrote a dissertation on a subject of the Hexabiblos.
