In non-small-cell lung cancer higher PD-L1 expression of tumor cells is associated with a better response to immunotherapy1 . In routine clinical practice a substantial number of thoracic oncologists tend to use cytological techniques like fine needle aspirations (FNA) more often than biopsies. Cytopathological analysis of pleural fluid, trans-esophageal or bronchial FNA and bronchial washing is frequently performed allowing tumor typing as well as a concise evaluation for treatment targets.
