In the common tern dataset, the most straightforward test for a relationship between individual annual reproductive success and lifespan also yielded no signiﬁcant result (Table 1, Bouwhuis et al. 2015, Zhang et al. 2015a), and evidence for heterogeneity in individual quality only became apparent with more detailed analyses (Bouwhuis et al. 2015, Zhang et al. 2015b).
