Forgotten fields. The usage and dating of later prehistoric field systems (Celtic fields)

Activity: Talk or presentationAcademic

Stijn Arnoldussen - Invited speaker

Due to their often impressive surfaces areas, the later prehistoric field systems known as ‘Celtic fields’ form the largest types of archaeological monuments that are still visible today. These systems of fields enclosed by low earthen bank are often part of our artist’s reconstructions of Iron Age land use, but frustratingly few have been excavated. This means that their age, development, and relation to habitation is essentially unknown. In this presentation, the results of various targeted research excavations of Dutch Celtic fields are used to determine how these field systems functioned.
