Film and discussion: Paris is Burning

Activity: Talk or presentationPopular

Maarten Zwiers - Speaker

On 13 November we will watch the documentary film Paris Is Burning (1990) by Jennie Livingston, which tells the story of the drag ball culture in 1980s New York City and the diverse minority communities involved in it. It is a moving account of the end of the "Golden Age" of New York drag balls, touching upon the issues of race, class, gender, and sexuality in modern America. The film has been selected for preservation in the US National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for its cultural significance.

For this event we will be joined by two experts, Dr Anne Martinez and Dr Maarten Zwiers, both of whom are Assistant Professors at the Department of American Studies. They will give a talk about American queer culture and discuss the film with us afterwards.
