Research ESRIG - Energy and Sustainability Research Institute Groningen Ocean Ecosystems Education

PhD track

The Doctor (PhD) degree is obtained after successfully carrying out an own research project during four years. On average 20-30 PhD students do their research supervised by a professor of the Marine Biology Departments, or associated with University of Groningen honorary professors working at NIOZ.

The Department has no own grant program, so its PhD students are dependent on grants from other sources. Sometimes PhD candidates have arranged for a grant themselves. More commonly, one of the scientists of Ocean Ecosystems (or Royal NIOZ) has obtained a grant for a topic to be studied by a PhD student upon which the studentship position is advertised.

All PhD students use English as their working language.
