Opportunities for Marine Biology Master research projects

There are many opportunities for Master projects within our Department. We distinguish different project themes and projects range from ecophysiology of marine microalgae and molecular characterization of polar microbes, to fish schooling, functional morphology of marine animals and marine biomimetics.

When planning a project, be aware that places for projects are often filled quickly. Therefore, inquire about possibilities as soon as possible.

  • To get up-to-date information on current Master Project possibilities, contact the Ocean Ecosystems Department
  • For Ocean Ecosystems related master projects at NIOZ, contact Klaas Timmermans
  • We also recommend checking our Facebook page where we post project opportunities regularly

Note that first Master projects (>30 ECTs) can be done at one of the two Marine Biology Departments at University of Groningen (GELIFES or OE), but also at NIOZ on Texel or in Yerseke.

Students seeking a secondary Master project may come with own initiatives and suggestions (also for working elsewhere anywhere in the world), provided that these meet our criteria for scientific content and quality. Otherwise, many opportunities exist to do a secondary project under the daily supervision of highly valued (on scientific as well as educational levels) colleagues in the field, nationally and internationally. Contact your study mentor for further discussions on secondary research projects.
