It is with a heavy heart that we deliver the very sad news of Ger de Bruyn’s passing on Sunday the 9th of July.

Ger passed away surrounded by his family, having battled a short but aggressive disease. Ger was Ger till the last moment, conscious, strong-willed and worrying more about others than himself. Thursday and Friday Ger still followed a live-stream of the symposium for Wim Brouw, a long-time friend and colleague.
His wife Aline worked day and night to ensure that the best possible was done in the given circumstances. His family and his close friends/colleagues were also doing their utmost to support him. Ger passed away in peace and at rest that things are in good hands.

Ger was a great scientist, a fantastic human being and a very dear friend to many of us. His memory will always live in our hearts and minds. Attached are two pictures of Ger in a setting where he felt at ease, inspiring and teaching others.

In this very difficult time, our hearts go out to Ger’s family and to everyone around him.

In memoriam Ger de Bruyn (1948-2017)

With great sadness,
All Kapteyn colleagues
