The Bandung Conference has been likened to a theatrical performance, staged before the world. It captured the emerging Afro-Asian moment so well that it became the eponymous “Bandung Era”. But this historiographical focus on a single event obscures more than it explains. Rather than create a narrative of Afro-Asianism's rise and fall, this talk will focus on a set of international events across Afro-Asia that overlapped, interacted, and included actors from far beyond the halls of power. It shows that in fact, Afro-Asian solidarity was “staged” in many different ways, and to many different ends.
