Cultural Democracy - Towards a Policy of Cultural Representation

Abstract

The concept cultural democracy has set foot in the Dutch discourse on cultural policy. Yet it lacks a clear definition, as well as an - at least theorised - relation with democratic practice in our society. Can culture be the platform for a true deliberative democracy? I will discuss the genealogy of the term and look at theoretical options of imagining a cultural democracy in the Netherlands. I will briefly present two current research projects in the field and practical action to start a discussion.
