Chair group European Politics and Society
Research in European Politics and Society (EPS), led by Prof. Lars Rensmann, explores European political cultures, systems, developments, and issues through empirical, theoretical and normative lenses. Bringing together political scientists and historians, the research group understands European politics and society in a broad comparative and trans-national perspective. A special focus is on the democratization and cosmopolitanization of European societies, within and beyond the EU framework. This includes the constitutive challenges, values, crises and conflicts shaping politics in European democracies today and in the past--from environmental politics, urban policy and social inequality, to populist parties, authoritarianism and the radical right. The group’s research is intended to advance knowledge about democracy in Europe in view of particular societal and political problems, norms, and conflicts – past and present.
Special research themes include cosmopolitan European political theory and critical theory (Rensmann), European populism, authoritarian politics, racism, antisemitism (Couperus, Rensmann), urban policy and social in/exclusion (Couperus), environmental politics, social movements and democratic participation in Europe (Milder), and European politics and sports (Rensmann). Members of the chair group teach primarily in the Department of European Languages and Cultures. The EPS Group welcomes applications for the PhD Programme through the Graduate School for the Humanities.
