On 22 February, Indonesian Ambassador in the Netherlands H.E. Mayerfas will give a talk at the University of Groningen.

The talk is titled 'Diplomacy in a Challenging Time – Indonesia’s Role as a Bridge Builder and Part of the Solution.' It is both a look back to the recent G20 held in Bali and the current role of Indonesia holding the chairmanship of ASEAN.

Ambassador Mayerfas will be accompanied by additional Ambassadors from Southeast Asia, including those from the Philippines and Malaysia.

This talk is organized at the University of Groningen, SEA ASEAN centre within the context of President Jouke de Vries's recent visit to universities in Indonesia and across the region. It is also held in the context of enhanced collaborations with universities in the region, including the upcoming hybrid inter-disciplinary conference 'Transformative Futures: Climate and Sustainable Development in SE Asia' to be held 14-17 March in Bangkok organized by RuG, Thammasat University (Thailand), and Gadjah Mada University (Indonesia), with scholars from these universities, plus ITB (Indonesia), NTU (Singapore), and the University of Tokyo (Japan).

The world is facing unprecedented multidimensional crises, such as the pandemic, the war in Ukraine, mounting tensions at Taiwan Strait and West Bank, as well as the looming threat of economic recession. Rivalries between major powers are also growing in an alarming pace. Concurrently, the climate change may as well cause a multiplier effect to those crises. Against this backdrop, with its active and independent foreign policy, Indonesia has been vigorously promoting a new paradigm of win-win cooperation, engagement, and collaboration.

The success of G20 proves that Indonesia has evidently succeeded to reviving the spirit of global cooperation in addressing various global issues. For the first time, the Summit comes up with concrete deliverables bringing real benefits to the people, especially those in developing countries.

This year Indonesia holds the ASEAN chairmanship. It aims to ensure ASEAN’s unity and centrality to continue its role as the anchor of regional peace and prosperity. Indonesia aspires to create ASEAN’s resilience towards various regional as well as global predicaments and becomes a center for inclusive and sustainable economic growth. Indonesia is committed to play an important role in various international forums, becoming a solution and bridge builder in the face of global challenges.
