This lecture will address the role of the European Parliament in promoting human rights during the 1970s. By looking at its initiatives vis-à-vis NGOs, Eastern European dissidence and the Global South, we will seek to understand whether it is possible to affirm that the European Parliament was the main European institution defending and fostering human rights between 1968 and 1979 - a decade which is generally recognised by scholars as a turning point within Cold War as well as human rights history.
