|When:||Fr 01-02-2019 16:00 - 18:00|
|Where:||Het Paleis, Boterdiep 111|
On Friday 1 February 2019, Antoon De Baets will give the opening lecture of the Sixth Winter School on Academic Freedom of the Honours College of the University of Groningen.
What Is Academic Freedom?
This lecture is about everything you always wanted to know about academic freedom but did not dare to ask. It is about what academic freedom is and is not. In the process, some cherished myths may not survive. Antoon De Baets first concentrates on academic freedom as a right that comes with duties. He then discusses institutional autonomy as the internal condition of academic freedom and social guarantees as its external condition. He also tries to locate academic freedom within the web of human rights. The lecture will end with discussing four theses about the problem whether academic freedom can be justified. There will be room for a debate afterward.
Antoon De Baets is professor of history, ethics, and human rights at the University of Groningen.
